Take a close look at this most intriguing machine cancel
from Washington DC, dated Sep 24, 1892. It has yet to
be definitively identified. Only three copies of this cancel
have been recorded. The two not shown are dated
Sep 24 and Sep 29, 1892. It has been classified (Payne)
as a Washington DC Indeterminate Type C-4. The
International Postal Supply Company and American Postal Machine Company
were the dominant suppliers of cancelling machines during
this time period, but this marking differs significantly
from anything attributed to either of those companies.
Despite enormous amounts of research by the Societies well
known machine cancel experts, new discoveries and important
new information are still out there to be had.
Notice the close resemblance of the dials between
the station C handstamp below and the dial on the
machine cancel shown above.
